About Project

Azerbaijan is a relatively small country both in terms of territory (86,600 sq. km) and population (just over 10 million people), located in the southeastern part of Europe. Despite its compact size, Azerbaijan features high mountains (up to 4,500 meters), plains, and lowlands (some areas up to 30 meters below sea level), forming 9 out of the 11 Köppen climate zones. The combination of these factors has contributed to a rich biodiversity of flora, comprising nearly 5,000 species of higher plants. Many of these plants are useful for medicinal, aromatic, culinary, dyeing, fodder purposes, and more.

To date, information has been compiled on nearly 1,600 plant species in Azerbaijan that possess medicinal properties, many of which have been used since ancient times and continue to be utilized in traditional medicine. It has been established that around 1,500 scientifically researched medicinal plant species contain various biologically active chemical substances and compounds that define their therapeutic properties (such as wound healing, anti-inflammatory, diuretic, hypotensive, cholagogue, antibacterial, insulin-like, etc.).

According to pharmacopoeias from different countries around the world, 272 species of plants, which also grow in Azerbaijan's flora, have the status of official medicinal plants.

The information presented on medicinal plants of Azerbaijan, categorized under 18 botanical and pharmacotherapeutic parameters, is intended for specialists and should not be used for self-treatment without the recommendation of doctors and phytotherapists.
